New Schools Open

Silver Crest Elementary, located at 12937 S. Elementary Drive (5500 West) in Herriman, opened Aug. 26 on a three-track schedule.  The District’s 32nd elementary school includes students from Butterfield Canyon, Foothills, Herriman, Midas Creek and Rose Creek Elementary Schools.  Jill Durrant is principal at Silver Crest.(See photos below.)

The Kauri Sue Hamilton School, located at 2827 W. 13400 South in Riverton, also opened Aug. 26.  The school houses students ages 5-22 who have severe multiple disabilities.  It offers the same programs and services provided at Jordan Valley School.  The school is named in honor of Kauri Sue Hamilton who attended Jordan Valley and whose parents Cletus and Sharon Hamilton donated the property for the school.  Rita Bouillon is the principal and Courtney Titus is the assistant principal.  (See photos below.)

A new high school in Herriman is currently under construction at 11917 S. 6000 West in Herriman and will open in August 2010.  Stephen Park has been appointed principal of the new school.  He is located at the District Office and can be reached at 801-567-8401.  For updates and progress on the new school, visit its Web site at http://schools.jordandistrict.org/newjsdhigh/.

All three schools were paid for with proceeds from the 2003 bond.

Jordan Family Education Center Moves

The Jordan Family Education Center (JFEC) is open for intakes and classes at its new location at West Jordan Elementary, 7220 S. 2370 West. Classes for fall semester begin the week of Sept. 15.

Classes are offered at no cost Tuesday through Thursday evenings from 7-9. Parenting classes are open to parents from all school districts. Family counseling for child-centered concerns can also be arranged by requesting an intake appointment. Please call the JFEC, 801-565-7442, to register or for a schedule of classes offered this fall.

Some of the classes offered include:

  • Anger Management (ongoing classes for elementary, middle and high school students)
  • Self-Discipline School (grades 7-9)
  • Calming the Storm Within (adult anger management)
  • Bully Stoppers (bully-proofing for students grades 2-5)
  • Positive Parenting Practices for the Children with ADHD
  • Effective Parent Training
  • Reading Your Environment (two social skills groups for children grades 3-9 with high functioning autism/Asperger’s) and an attendant parent support group
  • Parenting the Difficult Child and Teen
  • Blues Busters (for sad or worried children grades 3-6)
